Artist Statement

Rick recently travelled to the Philippines, to photograph Manila and its people. Much of that time was spent with Manila’s trolley boys.

The three-kilometre stretch of train tracks from Pandacan to Santa Mesa, including a crossing over the Pasig River, is home to these resourceful men, who transport passengers on their bamboo trolleys. Rick captured their lives, which halt only momentarily as the trains rattle past, before they reclaim the tracks again.
Rick shoots black and white film and has his images printed in the darkroom. He plans to continue capturing the lives of people around the world.
