Artist Statement

My work concerns the characteristics and processes of memory and its relationship to the autobiographical self. Memory helps to create us. Memories can maintain clarity but many change over time- fading, distorting, telescoping and disappearing. Sensory experiences, often involving objects, odours, language etc. are powerful memory triggers. Therefore among the imagery in my work are domestic objects, textiles, clothing and text. I choose to work with tissue paper as a drawing support and medium for paper cutting because its attributes echo those of memory. It is fragile, malleable, is successfully layered and interwoven, can be fragmented and distorted.
