Artist Statement
I have an intrinsic fascination with Polish folk art, in particular the art of ‘Wycinanki’ i.e. paper cut-outs. These intricately cut, brightly coloured pieces of paper are layered upon one another, resulting in a symmetrical pattern. I feel my Polish heritage is somewhat displaced; living in Sydney yet practicing traditional customs and rituals. Therefore the purpose of my work is to breathe new life into this traditional art form, bringing it into a contemporary framework. I have sought to focus upon aspects of ‘Wycinanki’, such as colour, layering and pattern, whilst also experimenting with various forms of mediation.
