Artist Statement

My practice challenges conventional notions of what defines textiles by subverting traditional techniques in order to address contemporary issues concerning human hair and its social significance in Western society. The growth, removal and control of hair is invested with sexual, gendered and commercial values which define our personal and collective identities. My work examines the media’s role in the establishment and reinforcement of these ideals, with particular focus on the female body and notions of “beauty” as prescribed by consumer culture.
