Artist Statement

An Important Place explores the enduring significance of our childhood home where the framework of our identity begins.

This ‘first’ home has been filled with four and a half decades of family life. Its modest simplicity and quirky characteristics continue to provide a sense of belonging, contrasting the disjointedness surrounding so many homes in modern societies. The hectic pace of those early years has been replaced by a gentle rhythm intertwining domesticity with resourceful industry.

Large format film, a pinhole camera and long exposures add a sense of whimsy in this juxtaposition of past and present.
