Artist Statement

The woolooh series started during a time of close of examination with my connection to this land. The looh references a Somali wooden tablet used through generations to pass down spiritual knowledge, while the woomera here is representing the battle and the struggles faced by the Aboriginal community in maintaining their culture and connection to land.

The symbols inscribed on the works come from an extinct Somali script and woomeras found online which combined created a new hybrid language. The wooloohs are positioned to resist against being collected as “cultural objects” that are often cut off from their communities.
