I am interested in the social functions of folklore and myth. Used as it is, to explain the difficult and elusive and to act as a moral gauge for the community. Moreover, vernacular narrative is a significant index for how kinship is understood within a community. My work is concerned with the folklore surrounding pregnancy and birth, as it is these stories that shed light on social attitudes pertaining to kinship and the illegitimate child. Within folklore, the origins of the ‘illegitimate’ child can be smoothed over with midnight cabbage patch magic and explained away by seductive pink dolphins.
