BILOELA, 2012
Biloela is a cross media campaign that promotes ways of improving the psychological and social well being of Sydney’s female youth, through the forgotten history of Cockatoo Island. The Biloela Industrial School for Girls, which occupied Cockatoo Island between 1871 and 1880 has inspired the aesthetic and theme of the campaign and highlights parallels between the “way-ward” girls of Biloela and the female youth of Sydney. The integration of textiles and graphics to create an image-focussed platform communicates the message of the campaign to my target audience in a format they are excited to engage with. In today’s volatile society, it is becoming harder for women to find their sense of identity and place. My project conveys the importance for young women to develop a healthy self-esteem and a sense of worth, two privileges that were stolen from the girls of Biloela.
