Arlia Patterson's current practice revolves around scientist Elma Garrison, who documented new species found in Cape Melville, Queensland, Australia in 2018. Investigating Garrison's archive, Arlia constructs an installation to reflect the wonders of discovery and the gift of knowledge. Through observation, research and documentation, archival materials are weaved in communication with detailed drawings and paintings. Showcasing the intricate, complex beauty of our Australian landscape. this work highlights the significant role scientists play in protecting the natural environment. Through encapsulating Garrisons intriguing fieldwork, elements of fabulation and parafiction emerge from the narrative of her life, adding a playful yet complex process to the artmaking.
