A&D ANNUAL 2021
Gabi Sher
The growth of technology, increased screen time, and the influence of social media in signalling what is attractive or unattractive in the 21st century, has encouraged an obsessive focus on physical appearance. Gabi's research addresses this problem, tackling the increasingly critical attitudes women have towards their own appearances. The research reflects on creative surrealism and conflicting self-reflection using co-design methodologies that explore the 'ideal' image of female beauty from the perspective of young women in a social media and photo-altering world. It explores the world of beauty and fashion, culminating in wearable design outcomes that challenge industries that idolise what is considered beautiful and feminine. The couture collection exposes the experience of body image pressures faced by young females. The design pieces create tension between the 21st century's technological age and the limitations on the way women should look through paired materials, fused forms, and combinations of body imagery that seem odd yet re-articulate perspective.
