A&D ANNUAL 2021
Huang Zexin
This research addresses the problematic increase in food packaging waste from Sydney-based online delivery platforms in the context of COVID-19 lockdowns. It connects to the UNSW Grand Challenge of Climate Change as waste generated through online delivery orders increases consumers’ carbon footprint. Therefore, this project extends Arunan and Crawford’s research on packaging waste and online food delivery services in Australia.Arunan and Crawford's research illustrates how during the pandemic there has been a 20% increase in online delivery with 30% of the packaging going directly to landfills. Using graphic design and QR code technology, Huang Zexin created biodegradable stickers for use during the packing of online delivery orders. Through scanning the QR codes, users are taken to a website to obtain uniquely designed wallpapers with information about the problems with packaging waste. By interacting with the website through the QR code stickers, this project encourages users to take responsibility and properly dispose of their online delivery packaging waste. Using Thomas Markussen's 'Disruptive Aesthetics Theory of Design Activism', this research intervenes in online delivery packaging waste to change consumer behaviour and highlight the connection between consumers and their carbon footprint.
