A&D ANNUAL 2021
Kirsten Faulkner
As a designer/maker, Kirsten Faulkner is drawn to the highly connected and tactile nature of a hand-made practice. The past two years have seen a resurgence in crafting as people have been drawn to the slow paced, meditative nature of making with your hands. Kirsten’s ‘craft renaissance’ was stimulated by the slowed-paced nature of lockdown and our increasingly two-dimensional digital existence. She designs with an awareness of the past and reimagines traditional techniques for the current moment. Kirsten's practice incorporates the disciplines of textiles, ceramics, jewellery, photography, and music. She believes we create to deepen our understanding of things; to connect beyond ourselves. The notions of material connection, the essence of human touch and the commitment to craft, guide her process of making. Her practice operates at the intersection of craft and digital realms, bringing them together to find new opportunities. She is inextricably connected to the objects she creates as they contain the essence of her movements. She seeks to uncover connections, relationships, and opportunities within the design realm and beyond. Kirsten imagines her craft will change as her voice changes, as she continues to search for connection and understanding.
