A&D ANNUAL 2021
Lily Langley
Lily Langley is a contemporary artist whose current practice focuses on large ink drawings depicting tongue-in-cheek scenes of Australian women engaging in traditionally masculine social activities aligned with 'mateship'. This series of work utilises methods of mark-making derived from her background as a printmaker to comment on women's exclusion from 'mateship' within Australia, both historically and in the present. Using a limited palette to reference the traditional comic book, Langley depicts strong, masculine and gender nonconforming women for whom she has conjured a fantasy realm of invulnerability. In 2021, Lily Langley was selected for the Tim Olsen Drawing Prize and has recently completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at UNSW School of Art & Design.
