A&D ANNUAL 2021
Maeve Donohoe
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the mental health of young Australians has suffered severely, with studies by the ABS reporting 28% of young Australians experiencing high or very high levels of psychological distress throughout the pandemic. Through her research, Maeve Donohoe found that isolation and lack of person-to-person interaction can be strongly linked with increased levels of anxiety and depression. The resulting designs fill a gap in practical, innovative design solutions to help young Australians engage in meaningful interaction while adhering to COVID safety guidelines and social distancing measures by sitting at the intersection of textile print design and augmented reality. Maeve's research is informed by Ludic Engagement design, which uses the idea of play and open-ended design to engage users. Co-design methodology informed the making, resulting in sensitive and engaging work for the intended target audience. The interactive textile work facilitates more meaningful and memorable interactions for the wearers who can engage with one another and the designs, safely socially distanced to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation through shared experience and play.
