A&D ANNUAL 2021
Megan Morrall
‘Coasting Along’ commemorates the memory of a passed family member. The objects belong to the environment of a games table, intended to be used as coasters for the drinks of those gathered to play. The games table setting is closely tied with fond memories of family bonding through the game Dominoes. In the game of Dominoes, tiles can only be joined with another tile of the same number; this rule has been abstracted and applied to the coasters so they will only stack together with the corresponding shape. The trilogy has been constructed with consideration of the relationship between rigid and fluid form, drawing inspiration from the ‘Heydar Aliyev Centre’ (2013) by renowned architect Zaha Hadid. The pieces have been made through a process of subtraction and addition, using brass rivets to laminate layers of River Red Gum and brass sheet.
