A&D ANNUAL 2021

The line between creative potential and mental illness is evidenced in the overlap of features between divergent creativity and bipolar disorders. This research project ‘Curious Collisions’ strikes a balance between these extremes through a series of colourful prints and fragmented videos of the everyday to magnify the in-between moments of formation. As a theoretical basis for this project, it draws on Yoko Akama’s connection of ‘Ma’ and Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory for constructing the 'in-between-ness' in the service of sustainable creativity. This research explores creativity and becoming — both heightened by the current contextual background of the COVID-19 pandemic — and reframes the artist as the sole author of an artwork by giving objects autonomy in the creative process. Responding to the Grand Challenge of living in the Anthropocene, this project promotes awareness around the depletion of designers’ mentality while achieving a circularity between well-being and creativity.
