A&D ANNUAL 2021
Remy Faint
Remy Faint is an emerging artist graduating from a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at UNSW School of Art & Design. His practice has developed from material investigations into painting that aim to position abstraction as an autonomous device within the frameworks of both Western and non-Western thinking. Remy’s work explores the interruption and manipulation of opacity to re-evaluate contemporary and cultural perspectives within abstraction. By using both traditional and unconventional painting mediums alongside forms related to his Chinese heritage, Remy’s work suggests an element of self-referentiality and illegibility. This approach aims to blur hierarchies and sequential definitions of materials and artistic processes. By adopting embodied, sculptural methods where painting surfaces and supports act as three-dimensional screening devices, audiences are mobilised to allow the works to be viewed in multiple and fluid ways. The modular objects encourage viewers to realise their shifting and alternating positions, allowing them to consider their own perspective and how it can change. Throughout his practice, Remy continues to investigate ways that these objects can be significant tools in communicating an unfixed and imagined approach to painting that stems from a variety of cultural narratives and sources within abstraction.
