A&D ANNUAL 2021
Vanessa Vasiliki Sophios
Vanessa Vasiliki Sophios’ project explores the question of how the relationship to one’s jewellery collection can be enriched through the design of storage vessels. The notion of preciousness is traditionally measured by the intrinsic value of an object. Here, it is represented not by what the vessel is made from nor by what it contains, but by what it symbolises. The sentimental connection between giver and receiver is created by gifting the vessel and the creation of an enduring reminder of that connection. Preciousness is thus created through the initial memory and reinforced by the physical presence of the vessel. The design is loosely based on shell forms and inspired by the Sailors’ Valentines from the late 18th to early 19th century. The curves and indents indicate how the hand interacts with the vessel upon the physical act of giving and receiving, establishing the presence of preciousness.
