Yuen Tin Ma
Yuen Tin Ma's research addresses the problem of pet abandonment in communities in Hong Kong and aims to change the behaviour of pet owners. It expands on research conducted by the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty that recorded approximately 5000 pets rescued from the street and 400 pets surrendered to the shelters in 2020 alone. This research relates to the UNSW Grand Challenge of Rapid Urbanisation, as a significant portion of pet abandonment in Hong Kong comes from overpopulation. Drawing on methods from 'Designing Things Together: Intersections of Co-design' and actor-network theory, this research identifies technology that can bring design participation to Hong Kong communities, enabling them to reflect through co-design activities. Using UX and UI graphic design, Yuen Tin has created a dog adoption app for Hong Kong citizens interested in adopting a dog as a lifelong companion. The app includes an adoption eligibility checker, the adoption process, pet care information, and pet care services such as dog training, pet clinic and day care centre information. These design specifications are intended to be functional and user-friendly to promote the adoption of abandoned dogs while encouraging responsible pet ownership.
