A&D ANNUAL 2021
Yvette Nemeth
Yvette Nemeth uses photography through a feminist lens, to explore traditional patriarchal narratives that have misrepresented the female body. Nemeth explores the mythological narrative of Medusa, alongside the story of Sirens, in order to reveal aspects of rape culture including victim blaming, toxic masculinity and the demonisation of female sexuality. Her work uses a camp aesthetic, appropriation, and collage to resist traditional representations of classical myths. Nemeth uses self-portraiture with the intention of providing a feminist critique, by dismantling traditional gender roles, as the woman herself has complete autonomy over her representation. She portrays the absence of visible nipples and genitalia, with an aim of highlighting the oversexualisation and censoring of women’s bodies. Her work is informed by a feminist framework and speaks from her own lived experiences, as a female with a European heritage.
