Anna Nolan
Light, like a bird, 2023.
Oil on yupo paper, 21 x 29.5 cm each
‘Light, like a bird’ is a collection of small paintings, made when learning how to live in the city.
Working on yupo paper — a material that exposes the gesture of each brushstroke and erasure, each image acts as a window, with its materiality capable of carrying the emotive impression of the audience as they wander through the work.
In painting balconies, car parks, a pale sky, or a curtain flapping through a window, I hope to give form to the quivering heart of things with the lightest of touch. They are small and simple paintings, depicting the quotidian and external, and in yet in doing so Nolan hopes that she can paint "...light like a bird, and not light like a feather..."
