But am I?, 2023.
Digital printing on 300gsm uncoated paper, digital printing on transparency film and image weaving.
Romantic narratives in oriental-themed films have normalised the objectification, sexualisation and heteronormative attitudes towards Asian women in Australia. This research addresses the challenges of inequality connected to gender and ethnicity by deconstructing unrealistic and stereotypical portrayals of Asian women. Within a framework of orientalism, my poster series titled But am I? features counter-narratives of Asian female characters in films generated during a co-design game with peers. Hilda's lived experiences of orientalism, self-orientalism and de-self-orientalism as an Asian woman residing in Australia are reflected through image-weaving. The poster series aims to encourage Asian women to understand the issues of inequality and consider their own lived experiences within Australia.
