Gabriel Proost
.SYNTH, 2023
Novation MIDI equipment, video synthesiser
.SYNTH utilises multiple media to capture the audience within its sound. Using Ableton's 'Live' function in conjunction with Resolume Arena, .SYNTH was all about control of the two - using custom MIDI mappings on two external audio controllers. This allowed for mixing in limitless combinations, and through a practice-led research approach, Proost is able to familiarise himself on how to balance all devices. As much as Proost ‘control's’ the work, there will be other elements that interact. Therefore, instead of controlling, he's merely changing the work, until he finds harmony in the balance. He articulates this as a kind of Incidental art.
A moving-image artist, primarily focussed on editing, Gabe Proost has taken a new approach in artistic expression - with sound. As well as editing, being a well-practiced DJ led him towards seeking an alternate way of completing this final project - a way that would leave him satisfied and entertained.
After picking up music production, Proost decided to combine both a passion for mixing music and editing visuals in a way that could be performed live.
