The Big Tutu, 2023
Created in honour of The Australian Ballet’s 60th year anniversary, the pop-up exhibition ‘The Big Tutu’ reimagines layers of details from the ballet through fantastical immersion into exuberant costume designs from the company’s past 6 decades of performances. Set in the public location of the Sydney Opera Forecourt, The Big Tutu encourages both Sydney-siders and conventional audiences to experience the graceful art-form through the playful means of a grand tutu-shaped dome, elevating the joy and wonder that underlines the technical, refined spectacle.
Inspired by the fantastical concept of Macropsia, the exhibition has been designed with the intention of magnifying intrinsic details and exhibiting them in a grand scale to transport audiences into a world of detail. Emphasising this wondrous nature, the exhibition’s unique display units evoke atmospheric qualities of the frenzied and wondrous backstage activity experienced by dancers, allowing audiences to speculate costume design through new lights.
Characterised as refined meets playful, The Big Tutu celebrates The Australian Ballet’s beauty, passion and elegance through a world of colour and textures. In celebrating the enchanting hidden layers of detail behind the ballet through a multi-sensory lens, The Big Tutu strives to inspire a deeper appreciation of the performing arts and offer insight into the dancer’s world.
