Lucy's art practice involves large scale abstract drawings that are a reference to music scores shown through random and gestural marks. Listening to music and responding to beats through speed, movement and drumming allows freedom into the unknown. This art practice is framed around process, being in the moment and experimentation with the outcome uncertain. It responds to the musical beat, which then gets transferred onto the canvas paper. The focus is on a technique of layering which builds up the marks through the process. The materials used are pencil and charcoal. Using charcoal creates a smudging effect that creates light and dark tones in the work.
Creating on the ground and distancing herself from the paper allows Lucy to have less control. Using tools such as a stick with the charcoal attached on the end becomes more gestural with larger strokes to create that mark.
