This project delves further into unsustainable waste generation practices within the textiles industry by implementing a recycling initiative that re-uses materials which would otherwise end in landfill. It’s focus on timeless durability as the new luxe, aims to redefine ideas surrounding luxury to reduce the rate of resource consumption by keeping materials in circulation within the economy. The techniques used to form the design explore the beauty of textiles in creating fully de-constructed and sculptural objects using the power of stitch and material coiling.
Malayka Kounsal is a textiles and object designer who creates functional bodies of work which take a problem-solving attitude towards designing. This is done by not only appreciating the beautification of things, but also tackling daily usability issues for global wicked problems. She is additionally interested in shifting a focus towards sustainable practices for the future and attempts to encourage this through her works.
