Reaction: A speculative neurodesign for monitoring sensory information and reducing over-stimulating experiences in urban environments, 2022 (Invisible Degeneration) to 2023 (Reaction+)
Interactive, generative, 3D modelling and graphics software. Physical materials include, transposed tools and outdated/broken technological parts + other mixed media.
With a background in graphics and experience design, I have explored the intensive sensory stimuli of how urban environments affect the cognitive and physiological wellness of neurodiverse people. Formulated as a hybrid digital and analogue device, the Reaction tool interprets sensorial activity in the environment through a visual display that communicates the probability of sensory overload. By examining tools as products alongside urbanisation and sensory data helped frame the research, viewing tools as artefacts for physicalising experiences. Supported by the Reaction manifesto my research aims to raise awareness of sensory sensitivities in urban environments and make spaces more accommodating for neurodiverse people. The manifesto expresses the design thinking behind the development of the artefacts and methods of practice that enabled Reaction to become more than just a reaction.
