Brass & Steel
'Rings for Restraint’ interrogates the deeply entangled issues of consumerism and the politics of consumption. Materialism places stresses on the body, the outer world and our innerworld.
Privileged to live in a culture of excess, to revel in over-consumption, it is difficult to practise restraint, you need new and want more - you relinquish control. Hidden behind this wall of bountiful materialism are the forgotten and vulnerable people that we do not see, they too are trapped, exploited, for their labour and their freedoms.
Mimi Rahman is a final year Design student with a major in Jewellery and a newfound passion for wearables and sculptural objects on the body. Prevented from honing her metalworking skills for the majority of her jewellery studies by Sydney’s COVID-19 lockdowns, Mimi’s passion for the body as a site did not stop her from pursuing the infinite possibilities in jewellery making especially with metal. Recently, she has applied this knowledge by only recently learning to work with metal. 'Rings for Restraint' is the culmination of years of theoretical background and the relatively recent practical application of her skills to an exploration of repurposing and reconstructing mundane, mass produced objects to elicit new and compelling meanings.
