Sterling silver, acrylic
In order to address the tension between those that need to fidget and those who are disrupted by it, 'Parashift' offers a collection of intimate, kinetic jewellery that facilitates mindful and controlled fidgeting, all while remaining respectful to others. Its kinetic mechanisms have been uniquely inspired by the shapeshifting adaptations of the Bird of Paradise courtship spectacle, in which males transform their bodies through complex feather structures and vibrant colours. The Parotia, Magnificent Riflebird and Red Bird of Paradise source inspiration for the spinning, sliding and flicking movements and sensory textures. The pieces ensure constructive fidgeting, by acknowledging jewellery’s unique connections and interactions with the body.
In comparison to fidgeting toys, which are often concealed devices, 'Parashift' establishes memorable and meaningful relationships by presently engaging with its wearer through play. Though interactions are subtle and intimate to prevent public disruption, they aim to transform society’s negative perceptions of fidgeting, to positive feelings of empowerment. The sculptural, aesthetic pieces are worn everyday with pride as they imbue the wearer with the confidence the male Bird of Paradise displays during his dances.
