Sarah Ong
Making a Bamboo Bench, 2023
Bamboo and video, duration 34 minutes
550mm x 700 x 1200mm
Sarah Ong is a Chinese-Malaysian-Vietnamese-Cambodian-Australian artist living in the unceded land of the Bidjigal people in Sydney South West.
Sarah’s practice centres around exploration of processes with organic materials, including rice paper, bamboo, and timber. Through sculpture and performance, she investigates the value of labour in artmaking and creation by subverting the focus on the art-making process, rather that the final art product as a result from it.
Ong aims to evolve her art practice to challenge how effort and labour are valued, and address the economic issues of the world, which affects both art and everyone’s way of living.
