Black Sheep by Tyrese Bernardo, 2023
In an attempt to dispel the stereotypical notions of traditional Asian-heritage parenting, Tyrese Bernardo has created ‘Black Sheep’ - a visual publication that combines graphics and textiles to create a platform that showcases the work of emerging Asian Australian creatives.
There is a common stereotype surrounding what Asian immigrant parents define as success - studying an advanced degree, and working a high paying job. Creative careers are typically looked down on.
“Black Sheep” is an idiom that describes someone who is an outcast, or seen as a disgrace to the family. It is also used as a symbol of rebellion.
‘Black Sheep’ aims to create an environment that not only exhibits creativity but elevates, inspires, and amplifies young voices. It is about allowing fellow Asian Australians to feel seen through representation of people “like them” in the creative industry, despite what their parents may think or say.
