Something in the Peanut Butter Jar That Isn’t Peanut Butter: a practice-led research exploration of hoarding through jewellery design
This series of jewellery designs has been guided by an everyday comment that captured my imagination, ‘Something in the peanut butter jar that isn’t peanut butter’. This comment came to mind and corresponded with my responses to the misinformation about hoarding behaviour in society, largely led by social media. I see misinformation about hoarding as exacerbating the stigmatization of the psychology of hoarding. With the aim to destigmatize and understand the multiple factors of hoarding, the jewellery series explores interactions that develop greater inclusivity in interpersonal relationships. My designs for the interactions of the jewellery series are drawn from the hoarding stories of three fictional characters from the book ‘Hoarders’ by Kate Durbin. Engaging with the jewellery through holding, manipulating and wearing provides alternative perspectives for discussing hoarding behaviours.
