野蛮生长 Growing Wild, 2023
PVC pipe, stainless braids, convex mirror 900 x 900 x 200 cm
野蛮生长 Growing Wild is an installation of mirror flowers growing from the ground that explores the themes of surveillance and urban alienation/ loneliness. The introspection and observation of convex mirrors and plumbing pipes alludes to the materials that are commonly found in construction sites. While the convex mirrors are used for safety purposes as well as a reminder of the constant surveillance that surrounds us in an urban context, it extends the paradoxical nature of urban environments, where people are both observed and observers.
Zi Qin (b. 2000, Sydney, Australia) is a multidisciplinary Chinese- Australian artist based in Sydney. With living experiences in both China and Australia, Qin depicts alienation through the tension between observing and being observed. He works with constructional materials that are commonly found in an urban environment and their relationship with surveillance. While the industrial objects are formed into various botanical creatures, Qin re-contextualises them into an image of dystopian nature.
