Carolina de Almeida Guarino
The work consists of 5x screenprints on handmade paper; each piece depicting a zinc plate etching print done by smashing corn (Tiros de Milho) and quinoa (Tiros de Quinoa), and a collage of satellite photographs of corn and quinoa crops in different regions of the Americas.
The work started with my interest in environmental issues and agriculture, as well as my curiosity to push the medium of printmaking and my Latin American background. I started experimenting making marks on zinc plates by smashing and hammering legumes and grains, and making paper. These simple foods carry a heavy sociocultural, political and environmental weight - removed from their indigenous lands and spread around the world to its current overproduction and commodification, they have played and continue to play an important role in colonisation. The prints aim to represent the violent history of these food crops and their powerful dominion in the West.
