Gosha Heldtz

My current body of work titled ‘true blue’ delves into the tension between Indigenous bodies and the ‘Australian’ symbols that supposedly represent everyone. Using lo-fi materials like cardboard and street art techniques, I reframe these national icons, exposing the personal impact they've had on me as an often lone Indigenous voice in predominantly white spaces. By transforming everyday materials into acts of resistance, I aim to shift revered symbols of national pride into objects of critique and reflection. This deconstruction questions their legitimacy as representations of identity, especially for anyone outside of the dominant narrative. By altering their context and form, I seek to expose the layers of trauma and the assimilation ideologies they continue to perpetuate.
