Yitong Xia

This work delves into the exploration of self-awareness and self-identity through the lens of Chinese otaku culture by establishing a heterotopia—a concept that reflects the "Other" perspective. The project uses the metaphor of a bedroom as a representation of the private mind, serving as a space where individual thoughts and identity are formed. By combining this intimate, physical space with multi-screen virtual animations, the work examines the complex relationships between the virtual and the real, between otherness and the self.

Through the immersive combination of video, sound, and multimedia, the project invites viewers to question and reflect on their own identity in both real and virtual contexts. This exploration of "Who am I?" becomes a central theme, as the heterotopian space bridges the gap between personal isolation and external perceptions, encouraging a deeper understanding of self in a digitally mediated world. The work aims to challenge the boundaries of identity by presenting multiple layers of self-representation, asking audiences to reconsider their relationship with their own "Otherness".
