A&D ANNUAL 2022

Kaarina Allen

The rise of urbanisation and apartment living has seen families lose direct access to nature through a decline of domestic gardens and lack of urban greenspace. Kaarina Allen’s research explored the effect of this loss of nature on children between toddler and school students aged four to seven years. The Sprout activity kit aims to build a connection to nature through visual and participatory activities, allowing children to grow their own food and share that with their families. All elements of this kit were hand crafted by Kaarina, including hand-binding the book and laser-cutting the box.
