A&D ANNUAL 2021

Melvin Josy

Melvin Josy is an object designer with a passion for creating narrative designs that explore unique craft techniques, technology, and materials. Melvin’s practice is an investigation to find meaning in objects beyond their function and aesthetic. His design objects question the mundane and reflect on one’s relationship with nature, culture and beliefs. Melvin's projects explore ways of creating cross-cultural artefacts that juxtapose traditional making techniques with modern technologies. He is a strong believer in creating a material culture that utilises traditional knowledge to create sustainable and emotionally durable products for our daily life. ‘Coalescence’ reimagines our relationship with furniture as a ritualistic experience. From merely ‘owning’ and using a piece of furniture, the design demands a symbiotic relationship with the user. The decay/ageing of the furniture is exaggerated through design details and the user is provided with the necessary tools to revive the object into its initial form. Thus, creating a ritualistic experience in the process of using and owning a piece of furniture or object.
