A&D ANNUAL 2020

Rohan Saini

‘Babbar Sher’ is a music video installation that addresses how traditional and cultural South-Asian instrumentation can be utilised in synthesis with contemporary Western Hip-hop frameworks, to effectively juxtapose the colonialist imagination. The visuals in combination with the lyrics, showcase a stylised narrative that reflects upon the struggles of the South-Asian experience — affected by generalisation and racism within the western construct.Rohan Saini has cultivated his artistic practice to draw upon his musical background. His musical artistry has explored genres from hip-hop and rap to R&B, and his own South-Asian cultural style. These passions lead him to develop his skillset further into the audiovisual field, and he now combines his musical foundation with visualisation to realise his artistic identity in ways that are true to his feelings and cultural upbringing.
