A&D ANNUAL 2021

Sandra Simmons

Sandra Simmon's work 'Transcendence' uses methods to connect to nature, despite living in an overwhelmingly digital society, especially with the COVID-19 lockdowns beginning in 2020. As we move away from the physical realm and into the digital, we often simultaneously move away from nature. Regardless of its definition—untouched wilderness, indoor plants, or botanical motifs—it is evident that humans have developed an affinity towards nature known as ‘biophilia’, and this connection is proven to enhance our wellbeing.Referencing techniques in immersive technology and salutogenics, ‘Transcendence’ gradually activates our five senses, effectively connecting us to nature while developing a deeper understanding of our reality. Experiencing ‘Transcendence’ encourages audience members to evaluate their connection to nature, and consider how they might integrate sensory techniques into their daily life in a future where digital and physical realms blur.
