A&D ANNUAL 2020

Sophie Millican

Sophie Millican's research project presents a travel safety app, equipping women to feel safer in the city of Sydney using non-verbal emotional gestures and data visualisation. Women's safety in high density areas is a constantly exacerbating issue where women feel heightened emotions of stress, anxiety and fear when navigating the city. ‘Gestr.’ functions similarly to a weather radar, using the collective contribution of women to add pins where they experience points of various emotions, creating an ever-evolving radar of safety. Sophie’s project solution targets two audiences: women living in Sydney through raising awareness of safe and unsafe areas; as well as urban designers, planners and governments, urging them to close the gender bias data gap and instigate reflection and change on the future design of city areas.
