A Sum of Its Parts: Abi’s Switchboard, 2023
Wood, Steel, Toggle Switches, Arduino Microprocessor, Speaker Drivers, Wires, Computer
Abigail Montgomery is an emerging artist about to complete her final year of undergraduate study in a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her practice explores the theory of networks, through multidisciplinary, interactive sculptural installations. By breaking the 4th wall between the audience and the art object, her installations allow each person who approaches her work to create individualised compositions and connections.
Focused on early 20th-century aesthetics, Abigail takes objects now viewed as nostalgic, historical artefacts, integrates the latest microprocessor technology, and recontextualises the traditionally utilitarian objects into works of art. Abigail simultaneously seeks to pay homage to the craftsmanship of early analogue technology. She seeks to highlight how these early pieces of machinery, especially telecommunication technology, have reshaped how we communicate, and the breadth globally in which we can connect.
