Watercolour on paper
My artistic practice is an investigation into the complexities and nuances of Australian masculinity, challenging traditional representations through intimate portraiture. I employ a documentary approach, capturing moments of masculine performance through photography that are then translated into watercolour paintings. This method allows me to observe the intricacies of masculine behaviour, capturing candid moments that are later transformed into rich, emotive portraits. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Nan Goldin, Kehinde Wiley, and Elizabeth Peyton, I leverage the delicacy of watercolour, the intimacy of portraiture, and the use of negative space to offer a multi-dimensional view of masculinity.
The fluidity of watercolour provides a unique means to challenge and redefine the robust attributes typically associated with Australian masculinity. My work invites viewers to critically engage with and contemplate the hegemonic masculine norms, stimulating dialogue and encouraging a deeper understanding of the fluidity of masculine identities.
