Triptych 1 and 3: 'The Garden of Australian Delights'

"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heav'n of hell, a hell of heav'n" (Paradise Lost, 1:254-255). To European eyes the Australian landscape has been viewed as either utopia/heaven or a dystopia/hell. The triptych locates Heidelberg Landscapes within Bosch's vision of heaven, earth and hell.
