Jayce [left] and Teagan [right] are two humans chosen and magically transformed by a threatened species known as Vesuvian phoenixes. These birds are hunted and captured for their powerful gemstones, which exist as tiny particles embedded in their feathers. In order to teach humanity the truth of their horrendous actions, they turn select people part-phoenix. As a consequence, altered humans also become targets because their wings share the same prized gems. In turning people on themselves, the phoenixes hope to make their suffering apparent and stop the cruelty taking place. Teagan has inherited the condition from her father, and has completely accepted her identity as being part-bird. Jayce developed his condition as a teenager, and still struggles to accept his new life.
