A&D ANNUAL 2020

Rachel Reichardt

How far from the surface does an idea, belief or narrative need to go before it is deeply embedded and cannot be separated from that which contains it? Rachel Reichardt’s work explores the repercussions of religious trauma, while navigating the perceived permanency of the marks that are made in childhood. The work investigates the materiality of porcelain which acts as both the pristine white canvas as well as the paint. Rather than sitting on top of the surface, the pigment is implanted within itself and is discernible only by the variation of colour. Once fired, it is nearly impossible to separate the pigment from the whole, unless it is broken.
