A&D ANNUAL 2021
Edward Whitehouse
"This research addresses our lack of awareness around how our data is retained and misused by both bad faith actors and the companies that collect it. This project diverts from previously designed solutions by taking an educational stance. Utilising actor-network theory to identify the unconsidered actors of any given social network (parties such as shareholders and advertisers), ‘Data Hoarder’ informs the user of the value of their own personal data and how it may be misused. Players take on the role of a social media CEO trying to gain as many users, as much data, as possible. Players gain data by rolling dice and playing cards representing the actions and actors within the wider network of data collection and social media. To gather data more effectively, participants lobby for weaker privacy laws, avoid whistle-blowers and draw people to their platform by any means necessary. Once the game has ended, players are not presented with a winner — instead they are met with a series of worsening consequences based on the amount of data they have collected. This serves as a catalyst for more informed decision making on the part of the player, who hopefully considers their data less secure than before. "
