A&D ANNUAL 2021
Jasmine Winsley
‘A Memory of Christmas’ addresses childhood memories triggered by sensations. The feel and smell of sparkling, shiny tinsel evokes a strong memory of decorating the Christmas tree, cold winters, and happiness. These childhood memories of Christmas in the Northern hemisphere, when the memory is triggered as an adult living in the Southern hemisphere, it doesn’t have the same sensation. There is a disconnect between the childhood memory that gets triggered and the time and place where it is being remembered. Jasmine Winsley has developed her artistic practice by drawing upon personal memories and her repetitive mark-making processes. These processes take a long time to build layer upon layer, which in turn allows time for the exploration of the memory represented. She uses acrylic paint with geometric mark-making on portable sized boards to reflect the way that our memories are portable too.
