Joshua Alipio

Joshua Alipio’s practice is informed by his lived reality, often exploring themes surrounding identity, memory, family, nationality, and culture. Through drawing methods, illustration and graphic design techniques, Joshua seeks to create his own representative space to portray personal narratives, especially those relating to his experience as a Filipino-Australian and the conversations surrounding the diasporic Filipino condition. In addition to drawing, Joshua enjoys incorporating and experimenting with different practices such as sculpture and craft, transforming his drawings to achieve different forms of storytelling. In his project ‘Balikbayan box’, Joshua aims to address the complexities of a transnational identity, resulting from the colonial histories of the Philippines and Australia. He investigates the Chicanx notion of ‘rasquachismo’ to develop his own expression of the ‘balikbayan identity’. Joshua champions migrant survival through the ‘hometactics’ practice of ‘making do’, which informs the artistic choices involved throughout the project.
