A&D ANNUAL 2021
Kyle McGee
Kyle McGee is a Filipino-Australian artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, drawing, and sculpture. Kyle combines unconventional materials within his art practice, utilising plaster, fabric manipulation, and drawing/painting mediums. He is fascinated by creating texture, abstraction of form, and dialogues that unfold across his artworks. He explores notions of the grotesque and beauty, and how the ongoing pandemic has caused isolation, displacement, and anxiety. Kyle's latest artworks convey the stripping and revealing of the human flesh. This exposure of the internal to the external expresses a sense of vulnerability as if the audience peers into one’s own flesh and mind. Usage of realism and abstraction of both the human flesh and mind amalgamate in a grotesque lucid form that delves into the psyche and extracts one's deepest fears, anxieties and emotions kept away in the internal. Kyle also aims to extrapolate the subconscious mind within his work and the imagery of the not-quite-recognisable has always inspired conflicting responses of fascination and horror.
